ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lisa Kyung Gross is the founder/CEO of League of Kitchens, a unique culturally immersive cooking experience in New York City and online where immigrant women, who are exceptional home cooks, teach their family recipes. LoK has been featured in Food and Wine Magazine, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Oprah Magazine, and on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, among others. Saveur called it "The multicultural cooking school you've been waiting for." 

As the daughter of a Korean immigrant and a Jewish New Yorker, Lisa was raised on one grandmother's denjang-guk and the other's matzoh ball soup. League of Kitchens is born out of her love of cooking, her connection to the immigrant experience, and her desire to connect people across differences. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two daughters.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Shandra Woworuntu grew up in Banyuwangi in East Java, where her family owned a food production company, a peanut factory, a bakery, and a restaurant. When she was five, Shandra’s grandmother set up a child-sized stove—with a real flame—and taught her how to cook eggs. Soon Shandra was cooking and serving the dishes she made to her grandmother’s employees, and that was the beginning of Shandra’s lifelong passion for food and cooking.

Shandra, who has lived in New York City since 2001, has also worked in restaurants and managed her own catering company, and currently teaches culinary skills to survivors of human trafficking through a nonprofit she founded, which aims to empower survivors of human trafficking with support services and vocational training. Shandra also travels the world as an anti-trafficking leader and activist. She now lives in Queens with her family.

Caroline Choe, the proud daughter of Korean American immigrants, is a chef, artist, teacher, and writer based in New York City. She is also the founder of Create & Plate, a business devoted to creating community through arts and food education. She is the creator of the cookbook Banchan.
